Chapter 11 - The Anger Megan Finally Aimed at Her Father

Recovery did not make Megan grateful every day.

One evening she exploded at Ray.

“You keep acting like you saved me.”

Ray froze.

“I never said that.”

“You don’t have to.”

She pointed toward an online article someone had shared.

LOCAL MMA STAR CONFRONTED BY LEGENDARY MARINE INSTRUCTOR.

The story barely mentioned Megan.

Ray’s jaw tightened.

“I didn’t give them that.”

“I know.”

“Then why are you angry at me?”

“Because everybody loves your part.”

Ray stopped.

Megan continued.

“Old Marine walks into gym. Tough boyfriend gets scared. Great story.”

Her eyes filled.

“But I’m the one who had to leave him.”

Ray said nothing.

“I’m the one who admitted what happened.”

Still nothing.

“I’m the one who wakes up scared.”

Ray finally understood.

The public version transformed Megan’s survival into Ray’s hero moment.

He hated that.

“I’m sorry.”

Megan wiped her eyes.

“I don’t need you sorry.”

“What do you need?”

“I need you to correct people.”

So he did.

Whenever someone praised him for “putting Dustin in his place,” Ray answered the same way.

“I didn’t stop Dustin. Megan did.”

When a podcast requested an interview about confronting a professional fighter, Ray declined.

When an old Marine friend joked that Dustin was lucky Ray hadn’t “handled him,” Ray did not laugh.

“My daughter asked me not to.”

That became the part Ray was proudest of.

Not entering the gym.

Leaving without throwing a punch.

Because Megan had trusted him with the truth on one condition.

He could not turn her crisis into his fight.

Ray had nearly failed to understand that.

Now he protected the boundary as fiercely as he once protected people.
