Chapter 6 - The Fight Dustin Wanted

Dustin wanted Ray to attack him.
That became obvious.
He posted vague messages online about “old men pretending to be warriors.”
He told gym members Ray had threatened him.
He claimed Megan’s family was trying to destroy his career because she regretted their breakup.
Ray did nothing publicly.
That frustrated Dustin.
Then Dustin’s attorney sent a letter accusing Ray of harassment for appearing at the gym.
Ray’s attorney responded with one paragraph.
Ray had entered during business hours, made no physical contact and left voluntarily.
The gym had multiple witnesses.
Dustin received nothing useful from the confrontation.
No assault.
No threat.
No viral video of a furious father losing control.
Megan understood before Ray did.
“He wanted you to hit him.”
Ray nodded.
“Probably.”
“Why?”
“Because then he gets to talk about me instead of you.”
Megan sat quietly.
“That’s what he always does.”
“What?”
“Changes who the problem is.”
If Megan questioned his drinking, she was controlling.
If she objected to insults, she was oversensitive.
If she tried to leave, she was abandoning him before an important fight.
Dustin transformed accountability into accusation.
Ray’s restraint denied him that escape.
Meanwhile, Warren suspended Dustin from training at the gym pending an internal review.
Not permanently.
Not yet.
Sponsors began asking questions after learning there was a documented domestic incident under review.
Again, nobody declared him guilty based on gossip.
But his professional world was finally asking questions it had previously avoided.
Dustin blamed Megan.
She nearly folded.
“He’s losing everything because of me.”
Ray shook his head.
“No.”
She looked up.
“He may lose things because of what he did.”
Megan started crying.
Ray did not tell her to be strong.
He had spent fifteen years teaching Marines how to function under pressure.
His daughter needed something different.
Permission to stop functioning perfectly.
She cried.
He stayed.
Then her phone buzzed.
A message from Dustin.
Just talk to me once without your father controlling you.
Megan stared at it.
Months earlier, that sentence would have worked.
Now she handed the phone to her attorney.

Dustin wanted a fight.
He simply had not realized Megan was done giving him the kind he knew how to win.
