Chapter 9 - THE CARD ON THE STEEL TRAY

The hospital conference room felt too bright for what everyone knew was coming.
Rosie lay inside an evidence bag beside surgical scissors.
The detective explained that the doll’s stitching could be opened under documented conditions and the memory card preserved separately.
Evelyn stood abruptly.
“This is absurd.”
She reached for the tray.
Michael slammed his hand down first.
“Don’t touch it.”
Daniel grabbed Michael’s wrist and shoved him away.
A security officer stepped between them.
“Sign the custody papers, Michael,” Daniel snapped, “or lose both of them for good.”
The threat made no legal sense in the room.
That was why it mattered.
Daniel was no longer speaking like someone protecting a child.
He was speaking like someone losing leverage.
Michael shoved the chair back into Daniel’s path and pulled the tray toward the doctor.
Evelyn tried again.
Michael caught her forearm and forced her hand away without striking her.
“Touch that doll again and every lie goes on the record.”
The doctor cut one stitch.
Then another.
A black microSD card dropped onto the tray.
Evelyn grabbed Daniel’s sleeve.
“Daniel,” she whispered, “get that card before he hears it.”
The detective immediately ordered both of them back.
Inside Rosie’s cloth body, the old voice module flashed once.
A tiny red indicator came on.
Daniel’s face changed.
Michael stared at the doll.
It had not merely stored Anna’s notes.

At some point during the three days he was gone, the recorder had been turned on continuously.
And someone had spoken beside it for hours.
