Chapter 3 - THE CASE THEY HAD PREPARED BEFORE THE COLLAPSE
Because a child had been found medically compromised in the home, the hospital made the required child-safety referral.
Michael expected it.
What he did not expect was how prepared Evelyn seemed.
She gave the social worker a folder containing screenshots of Anna’s missed calls, photographs of dirty dishes, and messages where Anna complained about being tired.
Daniel produced the draft custody papers.
They had been prepared three days before Michael left for Indianapolis.
Michael checked the date twice.
“You already had these?”
Daniel shrugged. “We knew something was coming.”
“How?”
“Because Anna has been spiraling for months.”
Michael looked through the packet.
One page stated that he had “expressed serious concern about Anna’s capacity to supervise Lily independently.”
The quote came from his conversation with Evelyn.
But the rest did not.
He had never said Anna was unsafe.
He had never agreed to remove Lily.
He had never asked Daniel to prepare legal documents.
The hospital social worker asked Michael whether Evelyn and Daniel regularly provided childcare.
“Not anymore,” Anna said weakly from the bed.
Everyone turned.
She was awake.
Her voice cracked, but her words were clear.
“I stopped letting them take Lily alone in May.”
Evelyn moved toward the bed.
The nurse blocked her.
Anna explained that Lily returned from a weekend at Evelyn’s house asking why Mommy was “sick in the head.”
Evelyn had been telling the child that Anna might eventually need to “go somewhere and rest.”
Anna confronted her mother and revoked unsupervised visits.
Michael knew about the argument.
He had thought it was another painful mother-daughter fight.
He had not understood that Evelyn had already begun preparing Lily for separation.
