Chapter 2 - WHAT HAPPENED WHILE MICHAEL WAS GONE
Michael had left Monday morning for a construction-management conference in Indianapolis.
Anna had kissed him goodbye at the garage door.
Nothing seemed wrong.
Her mother was supposed to stop by Tuesday afternoon because Lily had a dentist appointment and Anna was finishing bookkeeping for two restaurant clients.
Michael had even thanked Evelyn.
That memory became unbearable by midnight.
Anna woke enough to tell a hospital social worker that Evelyn and Daniel arrived Monday evening instead.
They used the spare key Evelyn had kept since Anna’s pregnancy.
At first, they said they wanted to help.
Then Evelyn began questioning Anna about Michael’s trip, her workload, her anxiety, and whether Lily was “getting enough structure.”
Anna told them to leave.
They didn’t.
Daniel took the spare key from the counter. Evelyn collected Anna’s phone “until she calmed down.”
Anna tried to walk Lily to the neighbor’s house.
Daniel blocked the door.
After that, Anna’s memory came in pieces.
Arguments.
A bedroom door being held shut from the hallway.
Food removed from the kitchen because Evelyn claimed Anna was “using meals to manipulate Lily.”
Water being rationed because Daniel insisted Anna was pretending to be sick.
Anna did not know how long each period lasted.
The hospital could document the medical consequences.
It could not yet document intent.
Evelyn told staff a completely different story.
Anna had stopped eating voluntarily.
She refused help.
She became paranoid.
Daniel claimed they remained only because they feared she would disappear with Lily.
Michael listened until one sentence changed everything.
Evelyn said, “You told me she wasn’t herself.”
Michael remembered the call.
Two weeks earlier, during an argument with Anna, he had called Evelyn and said he was worried his wife was exhausted, skipping meals, and overwhelmed.
