Chapter 7 - THE PAPERS WERE OLDER THAN THE CRISIS
Rebecca obtained the full custody petition Daniel had drafted.
The document was not created three days before Michael’s trip.
That was merely the latest revision.
The original file dated back nearly four months.
Two weeks after Anna revoked Evelyn’s unsupervised access to Lily.
The petition claimed Anna suffered recurring emotional instability and that Michael traveled too frequently to provide reliable care.
Evelyn requested temporary guardianship.
Daniel was listed as backup guardian.
Several supporting statements had blank signature lines waiting for family friends.
They had been building a case before any medical emergency existed.
Lily’s school records added another piece.
Evelyn had called the counselor twice asking how a grandparent might become an authorized pickup person “if a parent suddenly became unavailable.”
The counselor refused without parental consent.
A pediatric-office receptionist remembered Daniel calling for Lily’s vaccination record. He said he was helping with summer-camp paperwork.
The office declined.
Every failed attempt pushed Evelyn and Daniel toward a more direct plan.
Anna recognized the pattern immediately.
“They weren’t waiting for me to fall apart,” she said.
“They needed me to.”
Michael looked at the canceled grocery orders.
The restricted phone.
The prewritten custody forms.
The language Evelyn planted with Lily months earlier.
This was not spontaneous cruelty during a family argument.
It was an attempt to manufacture the crisis they had already described on paper.
Rebecca warned them that motive still had to be proved carefully.
Daniel could claim he prepared papers defensively.
Evelyn could claim she restricted food because she believed Anna’s eating habits were unhealthy.
Every abusive act had been wrapped in the language of concern.
Then the detective called.
