Chapter 5 - WHY LILY WOULDN’T LET GO OF THE DOLL
Lily refused to sleep without the rag doll.
Its name was Rosie.
Anna had sewn it from one of Lily’s old baby blankets after a store-bought doll split at the shoulder. Michael had added a cheap voice module inside the body so Lily could press the stomach and hear Anna say, “Good night, bug.”
Six months earlier, the module stopped working.
Michael promised to fix it.
He never did.
Now the doctor noticed the stitching around Rosie’s back was newer than the rest.
Anna became visibly anxious when anyone touched it.
“Don’t give it to Evelyn,” she whispered.
Michael asked why.
Anna looked toward the doorway before answering.
“Because I put something inside.”
Weeks before the business trip, Anna noticed Evelyn knew details about private conversations she should not have known.
Which therapist Anna had called.
What school Michael and Anna were considering for Lily.
When Michael would travel.
Anna began suspecting Daniel still had access to one of their shared family accounts.
She changed passwords.
Then strange things continued.
So Anna took the broken voice module out of Rosie, added a small memory card, and began using the doll to record brief notes to herself whenever something happened.
Not surveillance of strangers.
A private timeline.
Dates.
Comments.
What Lily repeated after visits.
Which account reset unexpectedly.
The doll had been beside Anna during the three days Michael was away.
The doctor said hospital staff could preserve it until police determined whether anything inside had evidentiary value.
Evelyn overheard.
She lunged for the tray.
Michael blocked her hand.
Daniel shoved him.
Security entered.
The scene ended with Rosie sealed in an evidence bag.
As Evelyn was escorted from the room, she looked at Daniel and whispered something Michael could not hear.
