Four months later, prosecutors filed charges related to unlawful restraint and child endangerment after reviewing the combined evidence.
The cases had not gone to trial.
Daniel’s cooperation would be considered separately.
Evelyn denied wrongdoing through her attorney.
Real accountability had begun, but it had not finished.
Lily started first grade with a new emergency-contact list containing only people Anna and Michael chose together.
The house locks stayed changed.
The spare key no longer lived beneath a flowerpot or inside anyone else’s purse.
Anna gained back the weight she had lost and stopped apologizing whenever she ordered food she could not finish.
Some evenings she slept beside Michael.
Other evenings she asked for space.
They remained married.
Neither called that proof that the marriage would survive.
The most difficult thing between them was no longer Evelyn.
It was the voicemail.
Michael could not unsay it.
Anna could not unknow how quickly he once gave her private struggles to someone who already doubted her.
They worked from there rather than pretending the damage belonged entirely to other people.
When police finally released Rosie, the doll came home in a clear property bag.
One seam down the back had been opened and carefully restitched.
Lily hugged it against her chest.
Then she noticed the voice module no longer worked.
“Can you fix Mommy’s good-night message?” she asked Michael.
He looked at Anna before answering.
In the past, he would have promised immediately.
Now he asked.
“Do you want me to?”
Anna touched the uneven seam.
After a moment, she nodded.
Michael carried Rosie to the kitchen table and opened his small electronics kit.
Lily climbed onto a chair beside him.
Anna remained in the doorway.
The memory card was gone, preserved with the case.
Only the empty slot remained inside.
Michael reached for a new one, then stopped.
Anna watched him.
