Chapter 1 - THE THREE DAYS I COULDN’T GET BACK

Michael Ward found his wife and daughter on the kitchen floor at 8:16 on a Thursday night.

His suitcase was still beside the front door.

Anna lay against the lower cabinets in sweatpants and one sock, barely responsive. Six-year-old Lily was curled against her chest, her lips dry and her skin frighteningly cool.

The refrigerator was almost empty.

Michael called 911 before he understood anything else.

At Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus, doctors treated severe dehydration, low blood sugar, and exhaustion. Lily stabilized quickly. Anna required overnight monitoring.

Then Anna’s mother arrived.

Evelyn Mercer walked into the exam area wearing a green coat and looking less frightened than angry. Daniel, Anna’s older brother, followed with a black portfolio tucked beneath one arm.

Michael had expected questions.

Instead, Daniel placed papers on the counter.

Temporary custody.

He wanted Michael to sign authorization allowing Evelyn to take Lily “until Anna became stable.”

“What the hell are you talking about?”

Evelyn glanced toward Anna’s curtained room.

“Your wife was starving for attention long before she was starving for food.”

Michael stared at her.

Daniel pushed the papers closer.

“Sign the custody papers, Michael, or lose both of them for good.”

The physician stepped between them and asked Daniel to leave the documents alone.

That was when Lily’s stained rag doll was placed on a stainless-steel tray beside an evidence bag. Paramedics had found it clenched beneath Anna’s hand.

Evelyn lunged for it.

Michael blocked her.

Daniel grabbed Michael’s wrist and shoved him back.

The doctor pulled the tray away.

“Why do you care about that doll?” Michael demanded.

Evelyn stopped.

For the first time all night, she looked scared.
