Chapter 10 - WHAT MICHAEL HEARD IN HIS OWN VOICE
The major twist came two days later in Rebecca’s office.
The card contained Anna’s short notes from the previous month.
Then a long recording beginning Monday evening.
At first, the voices were muffled.
Evelyn.
Daniel.
Anna.
Lily crying.
Then the device captured something that made Michael stop the playback.
His own voice.
Not from the business trip.
From three weeks earlier.
Evelyn had apparently played a saved voicemail aloud while arguing with Anna.
Michael heard himself say:
“I don’t know what to do anymore. She barely eats when she’s stressed, she thinks your whole family is against her, and I’m exhausted.”
He remembered leaving the message after an argument.
He had been venting.
Evelyn had saved it.
Now, on the recording, she used it against Anna.
“Even Michael knows you’re unstable.”
Anna answered, “He was angry.”
Daniel said, “It doesn’t matter why he said it. It’s what he’ll have to explain.”
Three earlier clues changed at once.
Evelyn knew Michael’s travel schedule because he had sent it to her when asking her to check in.
Daniel had language for the custody filing because Evelyn had collected Michael’s private complaints for months.
And Evelyn was confident Michael would eventually sign because she believed shame would keep him from admitting how much information he had given her.
The recording continued.
Daniel discussed canceling Anna’s deliveries.
Evelyn said Lily needed to see what happened “when Mommy refuses help.”
Anna repeatedly demanded they leave.
Then came the sentence that turned a controlling family into something far more deliberate.
Daniel said, “By Thursday she’ll look exactly like the petition says.”
Michael covered his face.
Anna did not.
She sat across from him listening to the evidence of her husband becoming an unwilling tool in the case built against her.
