Chapter 7 - WHAT VANESSA ACTUALLY WANTED FROM DANIEL

Daniel visited Adam alone.

Mia took Noah to her mother’s for the afternoon.

The meeting was uncomfortable before either man spoke.

Adam finally said:

“You slept with my wife.”

Daniel nodded.

“While you were separated.”

“I know.”

“You knew there was a chance Noah could be yours.”

“Yes.”

“You didn’t contact me.”

“No.”

Adam’s jaw tightened.

Daniel continued.

“I should have.”

“Why didn’t you?”

“Because Mia told me she was testing. Then she said the result was you.”

Adam looked at him.

“And you believed her?”

“Yes.”

“Vanessa didn’t.”

“No.”

Daniel rubbed his hands together.

“She’s never trusted anyone to handle their own life.”

Adam understood that description instantly.

Daniel told him something else.

Vanessa had been furious when Daniel refused to challenge paternity.

Not because she desperately wanted him to have a son.

Because Daniel had recently moved to Colorado for a better job.

Vanessa hated it.

She called him abandoning the family.

Then Noah’s uncertain paternity appeared.

A child near Vanessa.

A reason Daniel might return.

Adam stared.

“You think she wanted Noah to be his because it would bring Daniel back?”

Daniel nodded.

“I think she wanted a reason I couldn’t leave.”

Three strange behaviors suddenly looked different.

Vanessa pushing Daniel toward Noah.

Vanessa calling Mia a thief.

Vanessa repeatedly asking whether Daniel would “step up.”

This was not only about Noah.

It was about Vanessa’s fear of losing another person.

Their father had left.

Daniel moved away.

Vanessa had spent her life turning abandonment into control.

Adam did not feel sympathy.

Not yet.

But he understood the engine.

Then Daniel said:

“She told me something before the driveway.”

“What?”

“She said, ‘If Mia keeps pretending, I’m going to force everybody to face it.’”

Adam’s expression hardened.

“When?”

“The night before.”

“Did you ask how?”

“Yes.”

“And?”

“She said, ‘You’ll see.’”

Daniel looked ashamed.

“I thought she meant confronting her.”

Adam stood.

“You should have told us.”

“I know.”

The phrase came again.

I know.

Too late to prevent.

Still necessary afterward.

Daniel gave the detective the message history voluntarily.

That decision destroyed whatever loyalty Vanessa expected from him.

Her brother had finally chosen truth over being protected.
