Chapter 14 - THE FIRST FAMILY DINNER WITHOUT A PATERNITY JOKE

Almost a year later, Adam and Mia hosted dinner.

Small.

Adam’s mother.

Linda.

Daniel, visiting from Colorado.

No Vanessa.

No one mentioned paternity.

That felt strange.

Then wonderful.

Noah toddled between chairs.

Daniel handed him a toy truck.

Mia watched Adam’s reaction.

Nothing.

No tension.

No territorial expression.

Just:

“Say thank you to Uncle Daniel.”

Daniel looked surprised.

“Uncle?”

Adam shrugged.

“If you’re comfortable.”

Daniel smiled.

“I am.”

The word did not threaten Adam.

Biology had stopped being a weapon.

After dinner Linda approached Mia.

“I owe you an apology.”

“For what?”

“I helped you hide that first test.”

Mia nodded.

“Yes.”

“I thought I was protecting you.”

“I know.”

Linda sighed.

“That sentence sounds worse now.”

They both laughed quietly.

Then Mia said:

“Next time, help me tell the truth.”

Linda nodded.

“No next time.”

Mia smiled.

“Hopefully.”

Across the room Adam looked at Daniel.

“I hated you for about three weeks.”

Daniel laughed.

“Fair.”

“No.”

Adam shook his head.

“Convenient.”

Daniel understood.

Vanessa had nearly succeeded because anger wanted a simple target.

The family no longer gave it one.
