Chapter 10 - THE REASON VANESSA LOOKED AT THE HOUSE
Mia had never forgotten Vanessa glancing toward the house after Adam confronted her.
Months later, Daniel explained why.
Vanessa expected someone to come outside.
Linda.
Mia’s mother.
She had been inside.
Linda had arrived thirty minutes earlier to help Mia pack baby clothes for a weekend trip.
Vanessa knew because she saw Linda’s car.
Why did that matter?
Because Vanessa had planned a confrontation with Linda too.
Daniel found drafts of unsent messages after Vanessa gave him permission, through her attorney, to retrieve personal property from her apartment.
One note read:
LINDA HELPED MIA FAKE THE TEST. MAKE HER ADMIT IT IN FRONT OF ADAM.
There was no evidence Linda had faked anything.
The new independent test disproved Vanessa’s theory.
But Vanessa had convinced herself.
Her plan appears to have been to frighten Mia, force everyone outside, and then accuse Linda publicly of manipulating the first paternity test.
That explained the glance.
She was waiting for Linda.
Waiting for the audience.
Waiting for the “truth” she believed pressure would produce.
The driveway was not random.
It was theater.
Dangerous theater.
The major twist was almost more disturbing than a simple burst of rage.
Vanessa did not necessarily believe she was trying to kill Noah.
She believed she could use fear to force adults into the confrontation she wanted.
She treated a moving SUV as leverage.
The distinction mattered legally.
It did not make Mia feel safer.
Vanessa had become so convinced she alone understood the truth that other people’s safety became secondary.
Adam said:
“She thought the outcome would justify whatever she did to get there.”
Daniel answered:
May you like
“That’s how she’s always been.”
This time everyone finally stopped calling it devotion.
