Chapter 5 - THE PATERNITY TEST ADAM CHOSE FOR HIMSELF

Adam did not accept the old test.

Not because Vanessa convinced him Noah wasn’t his.

Because the first test had been done without his knowledge.

He wanted one that belonged to him too.

He told Mia:

“I’m doing another test.”

Her face fell.

“I understand.”

“I need you to understand why.”

“I do.”

“No secret samples. No Linda. No Vanessa. No Daniel.”

“Okay.”

A legally documented test was arranged through a physician-recommended laboratory.

Adam provided his sample voluntarily.

Noah’s sample was collected with both parents’ consent.

The result would take several days.

Mia hated those days.

Not because she doubted the answer.

Because Adam’s decision forced her to confront what secrecy had cost.

He slept in the guest room.

They spoke about Noah.

Meals.

Diapers.

Pediatric appointments.

Nothing else unless necessary.

Vanessa remained under investigation.

There was no dramatic overnight conviction.

The SUV had been impounded for examination.

Witness statements were taken.

Doorbell cameras from neighbors captured portions of the vehicle approaching the driveway.

Mia did not watch.

She had lived it once.

That was enough.

Then Adam found something in Vanessa’s behavior that disturbed him.

She had visited their street twice in the previous month.

A neighbor remembered the black SUV parked near the corner.

The first time, Vanessa claimed she was dropping something off.

She never came to the door.

The second time, she sat for almost twenty minutes.

Watching.

Adam told the detective.

The detective asked whether Vanessa knew their daily routine.

Mia answered:

“She knew I walk Noah around four.”

That was not proof of a plan to kill anyone.

But it made the driveway confrontation feel less spontaneous.

Then the new paternity result arrived.

Adam opened it alone.

Mia waited downstairs.

After several minutes, he came into the kitchen.

His face was unreadable.

She stood.

“Well?”

Adam handed her the paper.

The conclusion was clear.

Adam was Noah’s biological father.

Mia’s knees nearly gave out from relief.

Adam did not smile.

Not yet.

He looked at his son in the high chair.

Then at Mia.

“I never needed this result to love him.”

She started crying.

“I know.”

“I needed it because everybody else turned his identity into something they could manipulate.”

Mia nodded.

Adam placed the paper on the table.

“Now that stops.”

For the first time since the driveway, Mia felt the power shifting away from Vanessa.

Then Adam added:

“But you and I still have work to do.”

Mia knew.

The test solved one question.

Not the marriage.
