Chapter 12 - THE QUESTION NOAH WOULD ASK SOMEDAY

Mia worried about the future.
Not next week.
Ten years later.
What would Noah be told?
That his aunt once drove an SUV toward his stroller?
That his mother secretly questioned his paternity before birth?
That another man briefly could have been his father?
The therapist advised them not to build a mythology.
No heroic exaggeration.
No monster story.
No secret forever.
Age-appropriate truth.
Later.
Adam said:
“I don’t want him finding out from someone else.”
Mia agreed.
That was how the entire crisis began.
Adults deciding which truth another person could handle.
They created a private file.
The two legitimate paternity results.
No inflammatory family messages.
No police images.
Just factual documents they might need someday.
Then Adam did something Mia did not expect.
He destroyed the unauthorized first test copy.
“Why?”
“Because I don’t want the thing you did without my permission becoming some sacred family artifact.”
She flinched.
Then nodded.
The second test was enough.
A result they both consented to.
A story they both understood.
Mia asked:
“Do you forgive me?”
Adam looked at her.
“Not all at once.”
It hurt.
It also felt healthier than a quick yes.
She reached across the kitchen table.
He took her hand.

Not because everything was fixed.
Because they were still trying.
