Chapter 4 - THE BROTHER VANESSA CLAIMED TO BE PROTECTING

Daniel Brooks arrived at the police station voluntarily that evening.

Vanessa had called him from the driveway before officers took her phone.

Adam did not meet him there.

He was too angry.

Mia spoke with Daniel later by phone with her attorney present.

“I never told Vanessa Noah was mine,” Daniel said immediately.

Mia believed him.

“She thinks I gave up.”

“Why?”

“Because she thinks everything is a fight somebody wins.”

Daniel sounded exhausted.

Vanessa had always been the protective older sister.

Their father left when Daniel was twelve.

Their mother struggled financially.

Vanessa became part sister, part parent.

She worked through college.

Paid part of Daniel’s tuition.

Helped him through a difficult divorce years later.

That history mattered.

It explained why she felt entitled to protect him.

It did not explain attacking a baby.

Daniel continued.

“When you called me about the pregnancy, I told her.”

Mia closed her eyes.

“You promised you wouldn’t.”

“I know.”

“Why?”

“I was scared.”

The same answer everyone seemed to have.

Daniel had not wanted Noah.

He had not been hoping to become a father.

He simply wanted someone he trusted to know there might be a biological question.

Vanessa took that possibility and made it a mission.

“When the test came back, I told her it was done.”

“What did she say?”

“That I was letting you erase me.”

Mia felt sick.

“She never believed it was about biology.”

Daniel paused.

“What do you mean?”

“She treated Noah like something stolen.”

Silence.

Then Daniel said:

“There’s something else.”

Mia waited.

“Vanessa asked me last week whether I would raise him.”

“What?”

“She said hypothetically.”

“What did you answer?”

“I said absolutely not. He has parents.”

Mia gripped the phone.

“What exactly did she ask?”

Daniel repeated it.

“If the truth came out and Adam left, would you step up for your son?”

Mia stopped breathing.

Vanessa had been constructing a future.

One where Adam doubted Noah.

One where Mia lost her marriage.

One where Daniel accepted the child.

But Daniel had refused.

So why did Vanessa drive toward Noah?

Daniel’s voice changed.

“I think she wasn’t trying to hit him.”

Mia felt rage.

“Do not say that.”

“I’m not defending her.”

“Then don’t.”

“I think she was trying to scare you.”

“She drove an SUV at my stroller.”

“I know.”

Daniel sounded broken.

“But Vanessa does something when she wants control.”

“What?”

“She creates a crisis where everyone has to react to her.”

Mia looked toward Noah sleeping safely nearby.

Vanessa had created one.

Now half the family was questioning paternity.

Adam was questioning Mia’s honesty.

Daniel was questioning his sister.

And Vanessa had placed herself at the center of every conversation.

That might have been the point.
