Chapter 9 - THE CASE BECAME BIGGER THAN MEMORY
Caroline’s attorneys prepared for two separate realities.
The criminal case concerned Luke’s alleged conduct.
The divorce concerned the marriage, finances, property, and future parenting questions.
Caroline hated that the systems did not collapse into one simple moral decision.
Her lawyer considered that a good thing.
“Different questions require different evidence.”
So Caroline kept sorting.
The medical records showed injuries.
The police reports documented the witnessed hot-water incident.
The clinic logs showed Luke received sensitive information.
The questioned authorization showed how that access may have been obtained.
Evelyn supplied testimony about Luke admitting anger during one prior pregnancy.
Then Megan found something Caroline had forgotten.
An old voicemail.
Not secret surveillance.
Not a miraculous recording.
A message Luke had left after the third pregnancy loss because Caroline was staying overnight with Megan.
His voice sounded exhausted.
I’m sorry I grabbed you. I was scared you were leaving. We both lost control. Please come home before you make this worse.
Caroline had saved it because part of her once thought it sounded like love.
Now it sounded different.
Not a confession to causing the miscarriage.
A confession that the “accidental collision” was not accidental.
That mattered.
The investigation now had corroboration independent of Caroline’s memory.
Luke’s story narrowed.
First, nothing violent had happened.
Then he admitted grabbing her but denied causing injury.
Then he claimed she had exaggerated how forceful it was.
Each change made the earlier version harder to defend.
But the medical question still remained.
Could anyone prove his assaults caused the losses?
Dr. Wells continued to say no—not with certainty.
Caroline finally understood that accepting uncertainty was not the same as abandoning truth.
She did not need to make a medical claim no ethical doctor would make.
Luke had assaulted her during pregnancies.
Then lied.
Then blamed her.
Those facts were already devastating.
