Chapter 13 - PREPARING FOR A CHILD WHO WOULD KNOW THE TRUTH

Caroline’s third trimester became a period of paperwork.

Birth-plan updates.

Emergency contacts.

Hospital privacy restrictions.

Insurance changes.

Divorce disclosures.

Protective-order documentation.

She hated how bureaucratic motherhood suddenly felt.

Then she realized bureaucracy was simply another word for boundaries written down.

Megan was listed as the person allowed in the delivery room.

Caroline’s attorney coordinated with the hospital so staff understood that Luke was not authorized to receive information or appear without appropriate permission.

Evelyn was not listed.

Not yet.

Caroline also completed a new will and temporary guardianship plan for the baby.

Not because she expected something terrible.

Because after years of letting Luke control information, she wanted every important decision to exist somewhere outside someone else’s memory.

The criminal case proceeded toward pretrial hearings.

Caroline tried not to live by those dates.

Her therapist told her, “Your baby’s birth cannot become the ending of Luke’s story.”

So Caroline prepared a nursery instead.

A small room with pale green walls.

A secondhand rocking chair Megan insisted on refinishing herself.

A wooden dresser.

No elaborate theme.

No symbolism.

Just a place for diapers and blankets and clothes too small to believe.

During one appointment, Dr. Wells asked whether Caroline wanted to know the baby’s sex.

Caroline hesitated.

For years, sex had been loaded with terror.

Boy meant proving something.

Girl meant disappointing Luke.

Neither meaning belonged to the child.

Caroline finally said, “Yes.”

Dr. Wells smiled.

“A girl.”

Caroline laughed.

Then cried.

Not because she wanted a daughter more.

Because the information felt ordinary.

No judgment.

No test.

Just a child.

She drove home with the ultrasound picture on the passenger seat.

For the first time, Caroline understood how much violence had contaminated simple facts.

She decided her daughter would never hear that her worth had entered the world attached to a category someone else demanded.
