Chapter 4 - THE FIRST DECISION LUKE COULDN’T CONTROL

Caroline did not return to the luxury home in Lake Oswego that afternoon.

The house was jointly occupied during the marriage, even though much of the down payment had come from Caroline’s late father. Her attorney told her not to make dramatic assumptions about ownership or possession.

So Caroline did something more immediate.

She stayed with Megan.

She obtained legal advice about a protective order and the pending criminal investigation.

She changed her passwords.

She revoked Luke’s access to her patient portals.

She removed him as the person authorized to communicate with her obstetric office.

Then she noticed something.

Luke had been listed as the preferred contact on nearly everything.

Pharmacy.

Insurance.

Hospital records.

Lab portal.

Even a fertility clinic she had stopped seeing three years earlier.

Caroline had treated that as evidence he cared.

Luke always knew when results were available before she did.

Luke always offered to “handle the medical stuff” because Caroline became anxious after losses.

Luke always opened the mail.

It had felt loving.

Now it looked like access.

Megan helped Caroline log into the old fertility portal.

Most messages were mundane.

Appointment reminders.

Billing statements.

Lab results.

Then Caroline found an unread message from four years earlier.

Your genetic testing results are available. Please contact the office to schedule review.

Caroline frowned.

“I never reviewed anything.”

Megan looked at her.

“Maybe Luke did.”

The clinic would not discuss it casually over the phone. Caroline requested her chart.

That evening, Luke called from a number Caroline did not recognize.

She did not answer.

He left a voicemail.

“Carrie, you’re confused. Your sister is getting in your head. We need to talk before you turn something tragic into something criminal.”

She saved it.

Then another.

“You know I never meant to hurt the babies.”

Caroline stopped breathing.

Megan looked up.

“What?”

Caroline played it again.

Luke had not said our baby.

He had said babies.

Plural.

Caroline saved the voicemail in three places.

It was not a confession.

It was not enough to prove what happened.

May you like

But it told her something Luke had never admitted before.

He knew the old pregnancies and his violence belonged in the same conversation.
