Chapter 1 - THE WATER

The officers reached the bedroom before Luke finished emptying the pot.

Caroline was already on her knees beside the bed, both arms folded instinctively over her pregnant belly as steaming water struck her shoulder and soaked the pink satin robe clinging to her skin.

“Give me a son,” Luke roared, “or I’ll keep making you pay for every failure.”

One officer shouted for him to drop the pot.

Luke froze.

For half a second, he looked less like a furious husband than a man who had opened the wrong door and found his entire private life standing on the other side.

The metal pot hit the wet hardwood.

Caroline could barely process the sight of uniforms in the doorway.

Twenty minutes earlier, while Luke was downstairs, she had managed to send one message to her neighbor.

Please call the police. Don’t knock.

That was all.

Luke grabbed Caroline’s upper arm.

“Tell them you spilled it yourself,” he hissed. “Just like every other time.”

The nearest officer closed the distance.

Caroline twisted against Luke’s grip and reached for the medical records scattered beside the nightstand.

Luke tried to drag her backward.

Something in Caroline changed.

She knocked his hand away with every bit of strength she had left, clutched the records to her chest, and moved behind the officer.

“I kept them,” she said.

Luke stared at her.

“What?”

“The hospital reports.”

His face changed.

Caroline had spent five years believing the worst thing Luke could do was hurt her.

Now she understood what frightened him more.

Proof that he had hurt her before.

The second officer separated Luke from the bed while the first quickly glanced at the top page.

Radiology report.

Old fracture.

Prior emergency visit.

Pregnancy noted.

The officer frowned.

“These records don’t say infertility.”

Caroline looked at him.

Luke lunged.

Not at Caroline.

At one specific page slipping loose from the stack.

The officer blocked him immediately.

The paper fluttered onto the wet floor.

Caroline saw a line she had never seen before.

PATHOLOGY FOLLOW-UP.

Pregnancy tissue testing completed.

She grabbed it before Luke could.

He stopped struggling.

And for the first time that night, Luke looked terrified.
