Chapter 14 - THE LAST STORY LUKE ASKED HER TO PROTECT
Luke’s attorney made one final proposal before the criminal case advanced further.
Luke would accept financial terms in the divorce that favored Caroline on several disputed issues.
He would waive any claim to return immediately to the Lake Oswego home.
He would agree to strict communication boundaries after the baby’s birth.
In exchange, he wanted Caroline to provide a statement saying she could not medically establish that his past conduct caused the pregnancy losses.
Caroline read the proposal twice.
Then looked at her lawyer.
“That sentence is technically true.”
“Yes.”
“Why does he want it?”
“Because technically true sentences can be used misleadingly.”
Exactly.
Luke wanted one clean line he could hold up forever.
Caroline admits I didn’t cause the miscarriages.
It would erase everything around the uncertainty.
The bruises.
The fractures.
The lies.
The controlled records.
The two sons he knew existed.
Caroline refused.
But she also refused the opposite distortion.
She would not claim certainty doctors did not have.
Her eventual statement, prepared with counsel, was narrower and harder to misuse.
The exact medical cause of each pregnancy loss cannot be determined from the available records. The documented assaults and injuries occurred during those pregnancies, and I was pressured to misrepresent how those injuries happened.
Truth.
No embellishment.
No surrender.
Luke rejected it.
That was his last chance to live inside a version both could call accurate.
He chose not to.
Evelyn made a different choice.
She provided investigators the old text Luke sent after pregnancy two:
I lost it. Don’t call Caroline. I’ll fix it.
Evelyn had kept it for years because some part of her always knew she might need proof against her own son.
That truth did not make Caroline trust her.
It did show Evelyn had finally stopped protecting him.
Accountability was becoming unavoidable from multiple directions.
