Chapter 6 - THE WOMAN WHO HAD SIGNED TOO MANY THINGS

Caroline wanted to believe the signature was obviously forged.

It wasn’t.

It looked enough like hers that she understood immediately why no one had questioned it.

Luke had watched her sign hundreds of forms over twelve years.

Insurance.

Mortgage documents.

School fundraiser checks for nieces.

Tax returns.

Medical releases.

He did not need artistic talent.

He needed familiarity.

But her attorney warned her not to leap too far ahead.

A suspicious signature needed proper review.

The clinic also had to determine who received information and under what policies in effect at the time.

Nothing would be solved in an afternoon.

That delay was agonizing.

Caroline had spent years being told her body was defective.

Now every day of waiting felt like another day Luke’s version remained alive.

The emotional fallout hit elsewhere too.

Luke’s mother, Evelyn, called.

Caroline had expected anger.

She got fear.

“Luke says you’re accusing him of murdering his children.”

“I haven’t said that.”

“He says you’re trying to destroy him.”

“I’m reviewing my medical history.”

“He loved those babies.”

Caroline closed her eyes.

“Then ask him why he hurt me while I was carrying them.”

Silence.

Evelyn whispered, “He said those incidents were accidents.”

“They weren’t.”

Another silence.

Then something changed in Evelyn’s breathing.

Not disbelief.

Memory.

“What?”

Evelyn spoke slowly.

“After the second pregnancy, Luke came to my house.”

Caroline gripped the phone.

“When?”

“The night you went to the hospital.”

“What did he say?”

Evelyn hesitated.

“He said he’d lost his temper.”

Caroline closed her eyes.

“How?”

“He wouldn’t tell me.”

“Did you ask?”

“Yes.”

“And?”

“He said you were threatening to leave and he grabbed you.”

Caroline felt the room narrow.

“Did you tell anyone?”

“No.”

The answer was almost too quiet to hear.

“Why?”

“Because the next day he said the baby was gone and you didn’t need more pain.”

Caroline started crying then.

Not because Evelyn had caused Luke’s violence.

Because another adult had received a piece of the truth and chosen silence.

Again.

Evelyn began crying too.

Caroline ended the call.

For the first time, Luke’s isolation strategy looked less complete.

Someone else knew he had lied.

And that person had finally admitted it.
