At twenty-six weeks, Caroline moved into a furnished apartment near Megan’s house.
Not because she loved the place.
Because it had a secure entry, an elevator, and enough room for a crib.
The home she shared with Luke remained tied up in divorce proceedings and temporary orders. Her lawyer handled that.
Caroline stopped trying to win everything at once.
Safety first.
Pregnancy second.
Finances third.
The order mattered.
She also made an irreversible choice.
She told her obstetric team everything.
No softened version.
No “marital stress.”
No “accidental falls.”
Domestic violence.
Repeated assaults during prior pregnancies.
Medical coercion.
Pressure to misreport injuries.
Luke’s possible unauthorized access to records.
It was humiliating.
It was also liberating.
Every new appointment now contained one line Luke could not rewrite.
Patient reports intimate-partner violence.
The criminal investigation continued.
Evelyn gave a statement about Luke admitting he had “lost his temper” during the second pregnancy.
The fertility clinic provided authorization records and communication logs.
Caroline’s old ER charts were collected.
No prosecutor called her to announce instant victory.
There were interviews.

Then Luke responded through his attorney.
He claimed Caroline was reconstructing ordinary marital arguments into abuse because she wanted leverage in divorce.
Caroline expected the accusation.
It still hurt.
Luke also insisted the hot-water incident was not intentional.
That claim had one major problem.
Two officers had watched him pour the water.
Their reports described the same scene Caroline did.
His ability to reshape reality had limits now.
The wider consequences began quietly.
Luke’s employer, a regional commercial-development firm, placed him on leave after learning of the pending criminal investigation.
His professional reputation did not vanish in one afternoon.

A board committee postponed his promotion review.
Evelyn stopped defending him publicly.
Then Luke sent Caroline one message through the approved legal channel.
You’re going to regret making our child grow up without a father.
