Chapter 3 - THE DESCENT

Daniel could not leave the cockpit to be Emily’s father.

That was the hardest part.

Once the decision to divert was made, he had to become the captain more completely than ever.

He informed air traffic control of a medical emergency and requested priority routing to Omaha, the nearest suitable airport with adequate medical services and runway capacity.

His first officer, Marcus Lee, handled communications while Daniel coordinated the descent.

No screaming commands.

No reckless banking.

Just checklists.

Fuel.

Weather.

Runway.

Cabin preparation.

Passengers only knew there was a medical emergency.

They did not know the patient was the captain’s daughter.

In the cabin, Melissa followed Emily’s emergency plan.

A nurse seated in row six identified herself and assisted after Emily became too weak to handle the glucose gel alone.

Within several minutes, Emily’s responsiveness improved.

That did not reverse the diversion.

A child with Type 1 diabetes who had become significantly hypoglycemic after an assault still required medical evaluation.

Karen remained strapped into 2C with another attendant standing nearby.

She demanded her phone back.

Melissa refused.

“You have no right to take my property.”

“It was found beneath the minor passenger’s belongings during an active safety incident. It will be handled according to procedure when we land.”

Karen’s expression shifted.

“What did you see?”

Melissa looked at the recording timer.

Almost forty minutes.

That meant the phone had been recording long before the coffee was poured.

Karen suddenly stopped arguing about the seat.

She started asking whether files could be deleted remotely.
