By the time the case was ready for formal review, investigators barely needed Karen’s accidental recording.
They had Melissa’s report.
Passenger statements.
The nurse’s account.
Emily’s medical records.
Cabin service records showing Karen ordered the coffee minutes before approaching Emily.
The seat-assignment history.
The flight diversion communications.
Karen’s prewritten complaint.
Her messages with Charles.
And the recording.
The recording mattered because it captured Karen saying she would make Emily move before the coffee was poured.
But it was not the whole case.
That distinction helped Emily.
Her teddy bear did not have to become the magical object that carried justice.
It remained what it had always been.
A toy.
When police returned it, Emily washed the fabric herself.
The coffee stain around one ear never fully disappeared.
Daniel offered to buy her a new bear.
Emily looked offended.
“This one didn’t do anything wrong.”
He smiled.
