Chapter 1 - THE COFFEE CUP

Emily Carter was asleep against the window when Karen Whitmore poured the coffee.

The cup emptied across the pale blanket covering the twelve-year-old’s shoulder and upper arm.

Emily jerked awake with a scream.

Karen did not flinch.

“Maybe pain will teach you not to take up a seat your daddy didn’t buy for you.”

Three passengers turned at once.

The forward flight attendant, Melissa Grant, dropped the service tray she was holding and moved toward them.

Emily pulled the wet blanket against herself and reached frantically for the small red medical pouch beside her teddy bear.

Karen grabbed it first.

“You don’t need another performance.”

She threw the pouch into the aisle.

Melissa lunged and caught it before it slid beneath the next row.

“Ma’am, sit down.”

Karen stepped toward her.

“Stop pampering her. She’s faking because spoiled children always need attention.”

Melissa opened the pouch.

Inside were emergency medications, a medical bracelet card, glucose gel, and instructions printed by Emily’s pediatric endocrinologist.

Emily had Type 1 diabetes.

Her continuous glucose monitor had been alarming silently beneath the blanket.

The coffee had not caused the medical crisis.

The shock, interrupted sleep, missed snack, and Karen blocking access to the pouch had made an already falling glucose level more dangerous.

Melissa pressed the cockpit call button.

Captain Daniel Carter appeared at the doorway.

He had expected an unruly passenger.

Then he saw his daughter slumped against the window.

“Emily?”

She barely lifted her head.

Melissa held up the pouch.

“Captain, she’s deteriorating. We need the nearest suitable airport.”

Daniel’s hand tightened around the cockpit frame.

Karen took one step backward.

Daniel looked at her only once before turning toward the flight deck.

“You wanted her out of this seat,” he said. “Now this aircraft is landing because of what you did.”

He closed the cockpit door.

As Melissa moved Karen into another seat and secured her, Emily’s teddy bear slipped sideways.

A phone appeared beneath it.

Karen’s phone.

The screen showed an active recording.

Melissa picked it up.

Karen’s face lost every trace of color.
