Chapter 15 - THE SEAT BESIDE THE WINDOW
Daniel returned to flight duty seven weeks after Flight 101.
The review found his diversion appropriate and consistent with medical guidance.
His first trip back was Minneapolis to Seattle.
Emily did not come.
She had school.
Daniel was relieved.
Then ashamed of being relieved.
Rachel told him that was normal.
“Being her dad doesn’t mean you need her beside you every time you prove you’re okay.”
Daniel laughed.
She was right.
Karen eventually accepted a plea agreement related to the assault and interference with Emily’s medical care. Sentencing included probation, restitution, counseling requirements, and restrictions on contact.
No cinematic prison scene.
No public collapse.
Just a record she could not bully away.
Charles resigned from his executive role months later after Whitmore Aero Services completed its internal review. The marriage between Charles and Karen remained intact, though friends later said they were living separately.
Daniel did not follow them.
Emily did not either.
The teddy bear stayed on her bed.
The medical pouch got a new zipper.
And before every flight, Emily now checked twice that it was within reach.
Six months later, Daniel received two free companion passes from the airline after an unrelated schedule incentive.
He left one on the kitchen counter.
Emily found it after school.
“Where are you going?”
“San Diego next month.”
She looked at the pass.
“Am I invited?”
“If you want.”
Emily picked it up.
Then she put it back.
“I’ll tell you.”
Daniel nodded.
No persuasion.
No disappointment.
That evening, he passed her bedroom and saw the teddy bear sitting beside a packed red medical pouch.
The companion pass was tucked halfway beneath it.
Daniel did not ask whether that meant yes.
