Chapter 6 - THE WOMAN WHO TAUGHT LUKE WHAT FAILURE MEANT

Luke had spent his entire adulthood competing with a dead brother.

Andrew Mercer had been older, confident, and adored by Evelyn. He died in a highway crash at thirty-one.

After that, Luke became the only son left.

Evelyn transformed grief into expectation.

He would run the company.

He would preserve the Mercer name.

He would produce the next generation.

Walter resisted giving Luke full control because Luke made impulsive financial decisions. Evelyn interpreted Walter’s caution as humiliation.

Caroline learned this from Walter, not Luke.

Luke had told her his father was withholding control because he did not trust Caroline.

Another lie.

The marriage began to look different in retrospect.

Luke’s obsession with pregnancy intensified whenever company negotiations went badly.

After Walter rejected a proposed expansion, Luke came home and demanded Caroline cancel a business trip because “a wife trying to build a family stays home.”

After a lender questioned Luke’s projections, he screamed at Caroline for scheduling a prenatal appointment without him.

The abuse had a rhythm.

Career humiliation entered through the front door.

Caroline’s body paid for it.

Walter offered to hire private security for her.

Caroline declined.

She wanted professional protection arranged through her attorney and police, not another Mercer controlling who stood outside her door.

That choice surprised him.

It surprised her too.

Meanwhile, Evelyn sent Jenna a message.

Caroline is sick and Luke needs help. Don’t make a temporary crisis permanent.

Jenna did not answer.

She forwarded it to Denise.

For years Evelyn had survived by moving information through relatives who wanted peace.

Now no one was carrying the message for her.
