Chapter 2 - THE MOTHER WHO KNEW BEFORE CAROLINE DID
Caroline spent the night at Strong Memorial Hospital for monitoring.
The baby was stable.
That sentence became the only one she could hold onto.
Luke was removed from the house under an emergency protective order while police reviewed the incident. No one promised Caroline what charges would follow. Officers took statements, photographed damaged property, and preserved the envelope and Luke’s phone under ordinary procedure.
Caroline’s sister, Jenna, arrived before midnight.
She did not ask why Caroline had stayed.
She asked when it had started.
Caroline answered with dates.
The first shove came during her first pregnancy, after an ultrasound appointment Luke missed because of work. The pregnancy ended weeks later.
The second time, he grabbed her hard enough to leave bruises after a doctor said the fetal sex could not yet be determined.
The third pregnancy ended before twelve weeks.
Luke turned each loss into an accusation.
“You don’t want my family to continue.”
“Your body rejects boys.”
“My mother was right about you.”
Caroline had believed the cruelty came from grief twisted into obsession.
Now Highland Hospital’s call suggested Luke knew more than she did.
Jenna asked about the envelope.
Caroline shook her head.
“I’ve never seen it.”
The authorization named Evelyn as someone permitted to receive copies of pathology and genetic-test results from Caroline’s first two pregnancy losses.
Caroline had never signed such permission knowingly.
The signature looked like hers.
That was worse.
Evelyn had accompanied her to nearly every appointment in the first year of marriage.
She filled out forms when Caroline was nauseated.
She answered questions before Caroline could.
Luke used to call it kindness.
At 2:10 a.m., Caroline remembered something small.
After the second loss, Evelyn had stood beside the hospital bed and said, “Some women simply aren’t built to carry what a family needs.”

Now she wondered whether Evelyn already knew the baby had been a boy.
