Chapter 12 - WHAT EVELYN CALLED LOVE
Evelyn finally agreed to an interview with investigators after Luke’s attorney began emphasizing her role in the medical records.
Her loyalty lasted until she understood her son intended to let her carry the entire scheme.
That was when she asked to speak.
She admitted obtaining Caroline’s records.
She admitted encouraging Luke to hide the fetal-sex results.
She admitted paying Dr. Cole through Mercer Family Holdings because she wanted answers without “frightening Caroline.”
Then Detective Sara Monroe asked why Luke’s own testing never happened.
Evelyn looked toward her attorney.
“Luke refused.”
“Why?”
“Because Andrew was perfect.”
The answer sounded unrelated until Evelyn explained.
Andrew had fathered a child shortly before his death. The boy lived in Arizona with his mother and had no relationship with the Mercers.
Walter knew.
Luke knew.
Evelyn rarely acknowledged the child because Andrew had never married the mother.
Luke grew up hearing that Andrew had already proven he could continue the family line.
After Andrew died, Luke inherited not only expectations but competition with a nephew nobody discussed.
Evelyn wanted Luke to produce the “legitimate” grandson who would restore what she considered the proper line.
Caroline understood then why a daughter was never enough in Evelyn’s mind.
Not because of the trust.
Because Evelyn wanted to rewrite a family history she found embarrassing.
Luke had absorbed that shame until masculinity, fatherhood, business control, and superiority over Andrew’s absent son became one tangled requirement.
It explained the obsession.
It excused nothing.
When Caroline later faced Evelyn during a civil protective-order proceeding, Evelyn cried.
“I loved my son.”
