Chapter 10 - THE NAME INSIDE THE ENVELOPE

The unexpected name on the hospital envelope had not been Evelyn’s by accident.

She was the authorized recipient because she had orchestrated the entire medical-information system.

But the major twist came from the final page.

It listed the person who requested that genetic results be withheld from the patient copy.

Luke Mercer.

Caroline stared at the document.

Not Evelyn.

Luke.

He had personally signed the request after the first pregnancy loss.

He later told Evelyn to manage the rest.

Three clues snapped into place.

Luke froze when the doctor said every documented prior loss had involved a male fetus because he already knew.

He panicked over the envelope because it connected him directly to withholding information.

And when he attacked Caroline’s belly while screaming about producing a son, he was not acting on a false belief Evelyn had planted.

He was weaponizing a lie he knew was false.

Why?

Because the truth threatened the only identity he still understood.

If the losses had involved sons, Caroline could not be blamed for “failing” to produce one.

If his own evaluation might reveal a contributing factor, then the entire story of Caroline’s defective body collapsed.

And with it collapsed Luke’s favorite explanation for every failure in his life.

His career stalled because Walter distrusted him.

His marriage deteriorated because Caroline resisted control.

His grief remained because Andrew was dead.

None of those problems could be assigned to Caroline’s womb.

Evelyn had helped preserve the lie because she preferred a blamed daughter-in-law to a flawed surviving son.

But Luke was not simply manipulated by his mother.

He had chosen the story too.
