Chapter 3 - THE STORY LUKE BUILT AROUND HER BODY
Caroline’s obstetrician, Dr. Maya Patel, reviewed the available records the next morning.
The hospital could not immediately verify every document in Luke’s envelope, but the pathology reports appeared genuine.
Two prior pregnancy losses included genetic testing.
Both indicated male fetal sex.
The third loss had occurred too early for reliable documentation in the records available.
Dr. Patel was careful.
“These results don’t tell us why the pregnancies ended,” she said. “And they certainly don’t mean you caused them.”
Caroline closed her eyes.
Luke had spent years telling her the opposite.
He tracked her food.
He criticized her weight.
He demanded vitamins she did not need.
He blamed her work schedule, her stress, her coffee, her family history.
After the second loss, he insisted they move into a larger house in Pittsford because, he said, “A better home might help you act like a mother.”
What changed was not Caroline’s health.
It was Luke’s control.
Jenna brought Caroline her laptop from the house.
They searched old emails.
Evelyn had repeatedly asked for appointment dates and medical summaries. Luke forwarded them without Caroline’s knowledge.
One email from three years earlier contained a strange line.
Don’t tell her the chromosome result. She needs motivation, not another excuse.
Luke replied:
I know.
Caroline read it three times.
The cruelty had not been spontaneous.
The lie had been organized.
She forwarded the email to her attorney and the detective handling the case.
Then she found another message sent shortly before her current pregnancy.
Evelyn wrote:
If this one is a girl, we need to discuss the trust before your father’s deadline.

“What trust?”
