Chapter 11 - THE DAMAGE AFTER CAROLINE STOPPED EXCUSING HIM
Caroline’s anger shifted after the discovery.
For months she had imagined Evelyn as the architect and Luke as the man trained to obey her.
That explanation had been comforting in one dangerous way.
It left a version of Luke who might someday have been different.
The signed request destroyed that version.
He had been an adult husband hiding his wife’s own medical information.
He had watched her blame herself after each loss.
He comforted her in public.
He punished her in private.
Jenna asked whether knowing that made divorce easier.
“No,” Caroline said. “It makes staying impossible.”
The distinction mattered.
Meanwhile, Caroline had to confront her own pattern.
She had hidden the abuse from Jenna, coworkers, and doctors.
She wore sleeves in July.
She told friends Luke was “intense.”
She scheduled appointments on days Evelyn could not attend but then lied when asked why.
None of those choices caused Luke’s behavior.
They did help isolate her.
Caroline began therapy through a domestic-violence program and worked with a hospital advocate on a safety plan for delivery.
Luke would receive information about the baby only through attorneys unless a court ordered otherwise.
He challenged that restriction.
The judge kept temporary no-contact provisions in place pending further hearings.
Evelyn sent Caroline one handwritten letter.
I was trying to save my son from becoming nothing after Andrew died.
Caroline did not answer.
