Chapter 7 - THE PATTERN BEHIND RAYMOND’S RETURN

Marissa built a timeline.

Not because Daniel wanted ammunition.

Because Chloe deserved something better than competing parental stories.

Two years earlier:

Harbor Crest Development approached Daniel’s trust anonymously about acquiring Bayfront.

Daniel refused.

Eighteen months earlier:

Raymond’s company purchased the old marina parcel immediately north of Bayfront.

Fourteen months earlier:

Harbor Crest began planning a luxury hotel and residential complex.

The project worked far better if it connected directly to Bayfront’s shoreline access.

Ten months earlier:

A planning consultant noted in an internal municipal filing that “adjacent privately held pavilion parcel remains a potential acquisition target.”

Eight months earlier:

Chloe received her DNA results.

Seven months and three weeks earlier:

Raymond contacted Chloe.

Daniel stared at the dates.

The proximity bothered him.

It did not prove causation.

Then Marissa found the next layer.

Six days before Raymond first emailed Chloe, Harbor Crest’s land-acquisition director had sent him a memo identifying the owners and trust beneficiaries connected to Bayfront.

Daniel Reed, Trustee.

Chloe Reed, Beneficiary.

Linda Reed, spouse of trustee.

Raymond knew exactly who Chloe was before he introduced himself as the father she had accidentally discovered.

Daniel sat back.

“That’s it.”

Marissa shook her head.

“No.”

Daniel looked at her.

“It proves he knew.”

“It proves his company gave him information. It doesn’t prove he contacted Chloe for property.”

Daniel hated the distinction.

He needed it.

At the house, Chloe confronted Raymond herself.

Daniel was not present.

Later she called him.

“He admitted he knew.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

“What else?”

“He says he already knew the DNA match would eventually identify him because he’d used the same genealogy service years ago.”

Possible.

“He says the acquisition memo only made him realize I was your Chloe Reed.”

Also possible.

Daniel heard how badly she wanted room for Raymond’s explanation.

He gave it to her.

Then Chloe said:

“He also asked me something weird.”

“What?”

“Whether the trust changes after I marry.”

Daniel’s eyes opened.

“When?”

“Months ago.”

“What did you say?”

“That I didn’t know I was in a trust.”

Daniel felt cold.

There it was.

Raymond had been asking about Chloe’s beneficial interest long before Daniel revealed the trust at home.

Another pattern.

Not proof of a grand conspiracy.

Evidence of a man whose paternal interest and financial interest were dangerously intertwined.

That evening Daniel found Linda packing for the wedding weekend as though nothing had happened.

He asked:

“Did Raymond ever tell you Chloe was Bayfront’s beneficiary?”

Linda stopped folding.

She did not answer.

Daniel understood.

His wife had known too.
