Chapter 1 - THE SUIT SHE CUT IN HALF

Linda Reed put the scissors through Daniel’s wedding jacket while he was still standing three feet away.
Not an accident.
Not an angry swipe that happened to catch fabric.
She pinched the charcoal sleeve between two fingers, looked directly at her husband, and cut straight through it.
The torn piece dropped onto the hardwood floor.
“You won’t be walking her anywhere.”
Daniel stared at the jacket he had bought two weeks earlier for Chloe’s wedding.
His daughter stood near the staircase in an ivory bridal robe.
She did not stop her mother.
Behind her stood Raymond Cole in a navy suit that probably cost more than Daniel’s first truck.
Daniel bent and picked up the ruined jacket.
“What did you just say?”
Linda lowered the scissors.
“You heard me.”
Daniel looked at Chloe.
“Did you know about this?”
Chloe couldn’t meet his eyes.
Then she stepped toward Raymond.
The answer came before the words.
“Raymond deserves your place.”
Daniel’s face barely moved.
Raymond’s did.
A small smile.
Satisfied.
Eight months earlier, Chloe had learned through a DNA test that Raymond—not Daniel—was her biological father.
Since then, Raymond had entered her life with expensive dinners, weekend trips, and thirty years of explanations packaged as regret.
Daniel had given her room.
Maybe too much.
Now he was apparently being removed from the wedding too.
Linda reached toward the ring of workshop keys clipped beside Daniel’s wallet.
He closed his fist around them first.
“Touch my property again.”
Linda laughed.
Then she grabbed a folder from the console table and threw it down.
Mortgage papers slid across the marble top.
“Monday, everything becomes Raymond’s.”
Raymond’s smile widened.
Daniel looked at the documents.
Then reached inside his shirt and removed the sealed packet he had carried home from his attorney that afternoon.
He placed it over Linda’s papers.
Chloe snatched it up.
The first page read:
BAYFRONT PAVILION PRESERVATION TRUST.
Her expression changed.
Raymond leaned closer.
Chloe read the trustee line.
The color drained from her face.
Daniel took the torn jacket and turned toward the door.
Then stopped.
“Daniel,” Linda snapped.
He looked at Chloe instead.
“Read who owns your wedding.”
Chloe stared at the document.
Raymond’s confidence disappeared.
May you like
And for the first time since he had returned to their lives, Raymond Cole looked less like a long-lost father—
and more like a man whose deal had just gone wrong.
