Chapter 4 - THE FIRST THING DANIEL REFUSED TO SELL

Daniel did not call Chloe with the information.

Not yet.

He had spent twenty-nine years making decisions about what she should or should not know.

He was done doing that carelessly.

But he also refused to accuse Raymond without proof of motive.

Instead he took the first active step.

He notified the trust’s independent co-administrator that no sale, pledge, development option, or lease involving Bayfront was authorized.

Then he changed the locks on his workshop.

Linda discovered that by noon.

She arrived at Bayfront furious.

“You locked me out?”

“You don’t work here.”

“I’m your wife.”

“That doesn’t make my father’s workshop yours.”

She stared at him.

“You always do this.”

“Do what?”

“Make everything sound noble because you’ve got calluses.”

Daniel almost laughed.

Linda pointed toward the restored pavilion.

“You know what Raymond could do with this place?”

“Buy it?”

“Develop it.”

“It’s already developed.”

“Into something worth real money.”

Daniel looked around.

The old pine beams.

The dock.

The pavilion where Chloe once danced at seventeen after helping clean up a wedding.

“It is worth real money.”

“You know what I mean.”

Unfortunately, he did.

Luxury hotel.

Private residences.

Marina memberships.

Raymond had shown Linda a future where Bayfront stopped being Daniel’s restoration project and became a major waterfront asset.

Linda lowered her voice.

“You could retire.”

“I don’t want to.”

“Chloe could have generational wealth.”

“She already owns the beneficial interest.”

Linda stared at him.

“You told her?”

“She read the trust.”

“That was not yours to show.”

Daniel looked at her in disbelief.

“I’m the trustee.”

“You know what I mean.”

There it was again.

The family habit of treating truth like property controlled by whoever feared it most.

Daniel asked:

“How long have you been discussing Bayfront with Raymond?”

Linda looked away.

“How long?”

“Months.”

“Before Chloe asked him to walk her down the aisle?”

Linda’s silence answered.

Daniel felt something unpleasant settle in his stomach.

That did not prove Raymond manipulated Chloe.

But it meant the property conversation and the family reconciliation had been developing at the same time.

Linda crossed her arms.

“You’re jealous.”

“Of him?”

“He’s her biological father.”

“I’m aware.”

“And maybe she wants something from him you can’t give.”

Daniel swallowed whatever answer anger wanted.

“Maybe.”

Linda looked surprised.

Daniel continued.

May you like

“But if what Raymond wants from her is connected to my land, we’re going to find out before Monday.”

For the first time, Linda looked nervous.
