Chapter 11 - THE DAMAGE AFTER THE TRUTH

Chloe postponed the wedding.

Not because Bayfront was unavailable.

The independent trustee cleared the venue for the event.

She postponed because she could no longer stand the idea of walking into marriage while everyone around her was using the aisle to settle something else.

Ben supported her.

Linda blamed Daniel.

Raymond blamed the lawyers.

Chloe blamed all three parents.

Correctly.

She moved into Ben’s apartment for several weeks and stopped answering family calls.

Daniel respected the silence.

That was difficult for him.

He had spent Chloe’s entire childhood fixing things with his hands.

Broken porch rail.

Flat tire.

Bad door hinge.

College bookshelf.

Problems with no visible screws made him restless.

Then Chloe finally called.

“Did you know Raymond didn’t want to contact me five years ago?”

“No.”

“Would you have told me if you did?”

Daniel hesitated.

Chloe heard it.

“That’s the problem.”

“I know.”

“You all decide what truth I can handle.”

Daniel sat on the edge of his workshop bench.

“I thought keeping Raymond out protected you.”

“Mom thought keeping the paternity secret protected me.”

“Yes.”

“Raymond thought waiting protected himself.”

“Yes.”

“And then all of you got mad when I made the wrong decision with incomplete information.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Yes.”

Chloe began crying.

“I humiliated you.”

He looked at the torn suit sleeve.

“Yes.”

“You could at least make this easier.”

“No.”

She gave a broken laugh through tears.

“That’s such a Dad answer.”

Daniel smiled despite himself.

Then Chloe said:

“I meant what I said that night.”

His smile disappeared.

“That Raymond deserved your place?”

“At the time.”

Daniel swallowed.

“Okay.”

“You’re not going to tell me I was wrong?”

“I think you were.”

That surprised her.

“But you were allowed to choose.”

Silence.

Daniel continued.

“You’re also allowed to choose differently after learning more.”

The damage remained.

The wedding was postponed.

Linda moved into the guest room.

Raymond’s development proposal stalled.

Chloe had lost trust in every parental relationship at once.

May you like

Truth had not repaired anything.

It had only removed the excuse to keep pretending.
