Chapter 2 - THE FATHER CHLOE HAD JUST DISCOVERED

Daniel had known Raymond’s name for twenty-nine years.
That was the first truth Chloe had not yet fully understood.
Linda met Raymond when she was twenty-five and working for a waterfront restaurant in Annapolis.
Daniel was already in her life.
They were engaged, but they had separated after a brutal argument about money, marriage, and whether Linda wanted the quieter life Daniel was building.
For six weeks, she dated Raymond.
Then she came back pregnant.
She told Daniel everything.
At least that was what Daniel had believed.
Raymond was ambitious, handsome, and preparing to move to New York for a commercial real-estate job.
According to Linda, he did not want a child.
Daniel did.
He married Linda when Chloe was eight months old.
He signed no false birth paperwork. Raymond had not been legally established as Chloe’s father at the time, and Daniel later completed a stepparent adoption after marriage with Raymond’s formal consent.
Chloe grew up knowing Daniel as Dad.
Nobody told her about Raymond.
That had been Daniel’s mistake too.
Linda always insisted the truth would only confuse her.
Daniel agreed for longer than he should have.
Then Chloe ordered an ancestry kit while helping a friend trace family history.
Raymond appeared as a close biological match.
Linda confessed.
Daniel confirmed it.
Chloe felt betrayed by both parents.
Raymond arrived two weeks later.
He did everything Daniel did not.
He talked about the past.
He apologized easily.
He showed Chloe photographs.
He took her to Manhattan.
He bought her a bracelet engraved with her birth date.
Daniel remained careful and quiet.
Chloe interpreted that quiet as indifference.
By the time wedding planning intensified, Raymond had become involved in everything.
Flowers.
Cars.
Wine.
Hotel rooms.
He offered to pay for half the event.
Then Linda suggested that Raymond walk Chloe down the aisle.
Daniel had assumed Chloe would refuse.
She didn’t.
Now, standing alone in his truck outside the house, Daniel understood that he had misread how far things had gone.
His phone rang.
Chloe.
He answered.
“What does this trust mean?”
“It means exactly what it says.”
“Do you own Bayfront?”
“Not personally.”
“You’re the trustee.”
“Yes.”
“For who?”
Daniel closed his eyes.
Silence.
Then:
“Dad.”
It was the first time she had called him that in almost a month.
“The beneficiary is me.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because I built it for you.”
Another silence.

Then Chloe asked the question that told Daniel how much Raymond had already shaped the story.
“Then why did Mom say Raymond was buying it Monday?”
