Chapter 7 - THE SECOND SCREENSHOT

The second piece of evidence came from Ryan.

He arrived at Hannah’s house carrying his laptop.

Claire almost refused to let him in.

Then she saw his face.

“What?”

“I found more messages.”

They sat at the table.

Ryan opened his thread with Margaret from the final month of Claire’s pregnancy.

Margaret:

SHE’S ALREADY TALKING ABOUT TAKING THE BABY OUT OF STATE.

Ryan:

SHE SAID HER MOM’S FOR A WEEK.

Margaret:

THAT’S HOW IT STARTS.

Another message:

YOU NEED A PLAN BEFORE YOU’RE STANDING IN AN EMPTY HOUSE WONDERING WHERE YOUR SON IS.

Claire read it twice.

Margaret had repeatedly invoked Ryan’s childhood.

Empty house.

Missing parent.

No warning.

Ryan looked ashamed.

“I should have stopped it.”

“Yes.”

“I thought she was helping me think clearly.”

“She was making sure you couldn’t.”

Ryan nodded.

Then he opened another screenshot Margaret had sent him.

A message supposedly from Claire to Hannah:

RYAN WOULD NEVER STOP ME IF I JUST LEFT BEFORE HE GOT HOME.

Claire’s face went cold.

She searched her own history.

The original sentence:

RYAN WOULD NEVER STOP ME FROM GOING TO MOM’S IF I JUST LEFT BEFORE HE GOT HOME AND AVOIDED ANOTHER ARGUMENT WITH MARGARET.

Again.

The meaning had been narrowed.

Context stripped away.

Not enough to look obviously fabricated.

Enough to change intent.

Ryan stared at the original.

“How many did she alter?”

They found four.

All built from genuine pieces of Claire’s texts.

All transformed frustration into threat.

Ryan sat back.

“I believed them.”

Claire did not comfort him.

“You wanted to.”

His eyes lifted.

“That’s not fair.”

“It is.”

Ryan started to protest.

Claire continued.

“You were scared. She handed you proof that matched your fear. And instead of asking me whether it was true, you built a backup plan.”

Ryan looked away.

Claire’s anger softened only slightly.

“I said reckless things.”

He looked back.

“I joked about disappearing.”

“Yes.”

“I threatened to stay with Mom when I was angry.”

“Yes.”

“That was unfair to you.”

Ryan blinked.

Claire continued.

“But my bad communication did not give you permission to secretly decide where our newborn goes.”

“No.”

“And Margaret editing my words doesn’t erase that.”

“I know.”

That was the relationship shift.

For the first time, Ryan stopped treating being manipulated as a defense.

He had been deceived.

May you like

He had also made choices.

Both would have to be dealt with.
