Chapter 11 - THE PART RYAN COULDN’T BLAME ON MARGARET
Ryan spent days furious at Margaret.
Then therapy turned the anger back toward him.
His therapist asked:
“If Margaret had never sent the altered screenshots, what would you have done when Claire joked about leaving?”
Ryan answered:
“I should have asked her.”
“Would you have?”
He did not know.
That was the problem.
Ryan hated conflict that carried the possibility of abandonment.
When Claire said:
“I’m done.”
He heard:
I’m leaving forever.
When she said:
“I need space.”
He heard:
You’re about to lose your family.
Margaret knew because she had helped raise him.
But Claire had experienced the same pattern for years without understanding where it came from.
Arguments ended with Ryan demanding reassurance.
Promise you’re not leaving.
Tell me we’re okay.
Claire often gave it even while still angry.
Eventually she began using the threat of leaving because it was the only language that made him stop defending Margaret.
That was unhealthy too.
At their first couples session, Claire admitted it.
“I knew saying I’d go to Mom’s scared you.”
Ryan looked at her.
“Yes.”
“Sometimes I said it because I wanted you to finally listen.”
He nodded.
“That wasn’t fair.”
“No.”
Then Ryan said:
“And I used my fear to justify controlling the conversation.”
Claire waited.
“I let Margaret convince me that protecting myself from abandonment was the same as protecting Owen.”
His voice cracked.
“It wasn’t.”
That mattered more than another apology.
Ryan could not repair the marriage by proving Margaret was worse.
He had to understand why her manipulation worked.
Claire also had to understand why her anger had turned into threats instead of boundaries.
The truth was inconvenient.
Margaret had engineered the crisis.
But the cracks she exploited had already existed.
Claire left counseling unsure whether that realization made reconciliation more likely or less.
At least now the problem had names.
Fear.
Avoidance.
