Chapter 2 - THE PLAN WITH CLAIRE’S NAME MISSING

“Yes.”
Ryan barely got the word out.
Claire felt the hallway tilt.
Margaret folded her arms as if Ryan’s admission vindicated everything.
Claire ignored her.
“You chose Margaret to take Owen?”
“No. Not like this.”
“What other way is there?”
Ryan stepped closer.
Claire immediately backed away with the car seat.
He stopped.
“Before Owen was born, I asked Margaret if she could be our emergency backup.”
“Our?”
Ryan looked ashamed.
“My backup.”
Claire laughed once.
There was nothing humorous in it.
“For what emergency?”
“If you left unexpectedly.”
Margaret interrupted.
“If she disappeared.”
Ryan snapped toward her.
“Stop saying it like that.”
“But that’s exactly what you said.”
Claire stared at him.
“Why would I disappear?”
Ryan rubbed his forehead.
“Claire, you were exhausted. We were fighting constantly.”
“So?”
“You said things.”
“What things?”
“You know what things.”
“No. Apparently I don’t know anything happening in my own family.”
Owen began fussing.
Claire immediately carried him into the nursery and placed the car seat safely on the floor.
Ryan followed only as far as the doorway.
Margaret remained behind him.
Claire unfastened Owen, lifted him against her chest, and let his familiar weight steady her.
Then she noticed the nursery.
The diaper caddy was half empty.
Two sleepers were missing.
The spare pacifiers were gone.
So was the small container of ready-to-feed formula they kept for emergencies.
Claire turned.
“How long was she planning this?”
Ryan looked confused.
“Planning what?”
Claire pointed.
“Things are missing.”
Margaret answered calmly.
“I packed what Owen would need.”
Ryan’s face changed.
“You packed his nursery?”
“I prepared.”
“For what?”
“For exactly what you asked me to prepare for.”
Ryan stared at his stepmother.
“I asked whether you could take him for a few hours if there was an emergency.”
Margaret’s expression remained composed.
“You told me Claire might disappear with him.”
“No.”
Claire looked between them.
Ryan said more firmly:
“I said I was afraid she might leave.”
“That’s the same thing.”
“No, it isn’t.”
Claire’s chest tightened.
“When did this conversation happen?”
Neither answered immediately.
“Ryan.”
“Two weeks before Owen was born.”
Claire remembered that week.
Swollen ankles.
No sleep.
Margaret criticizing the nursery.
Ryan working late because his company was closing a quarterly project.
And one ugly argument in the kitchen.
Claire had told him:
“If your stepmother doesn’t stop running this house, I swear I’m going to disappear for a week.”
She remembered Ryan going quiet.
She remembered apologizing the next morning.
“I was angry.”
Ryan nodded.
“I know.”
“You thought I meant disappear with our child?”
“At first, yes.”
“Why didn’t you ask me?”
Ryan looked toward Margaret.
That single glance told Claire there was more.
She turned to her mother-in-law.
“What did you tell him?”
Margaret’s mouth tightened.
“I told him to take you seriously.”
Claire looked at the suitcase still sitting by the open door.
The missing nursery supplies.
The packed baby gear.
Margaret had not improvised this afternoon.
She had been waiting for an opportunity.
Claire held Owen tighter.
“Get out.”
Margaret scoffed.
“Claire—”
“Get out of my house.”
Margaret looked at Ryan.
He did not defend her.
“Now,” he said.
Margaret’s face hardened.
She picked up the suitcase.
At the doorway she stopped.
“You’ll regret this when she does exactly what she threatened.”
Claire watched her leave.
May you like
Then she turned toward her husband.
“What exactly did she show you that made you believe I was planning to run?”
