Chapter 14 - THE LAST TIME RYAN ASKED CLAIRE TO TRUST HIM
Three months after the hallway confrontation, Ryan came to Claire’s apartment carrying nothing.
No flowers.
No apology gift.
No folder.
He sat across from her at the small dining table.
Owen slept nearby.
“I want to come home,” he said.
Claire looked at him.
Ryan had remained in their house.
Claire had stayed in the apartment.
They shared Owen’s daily care by agreement.
Both attended counseling.
Margaret had not seen Owen.
Claire asked:
“What does home mean?”
Ryan hesitated.
“Our house.”
“That’s an address.”
He nodded.
“I know.”
Claire waited.
Ryan continued.
“I want us to try again.”
The answer she had expected for weeks finally arrived.
Claire felt no relief.
Only pressure.
“I don’t know if I can trust you.”
“I know.”
“You believed someone else’s version of me before asking me.”
“Yes.”
“You discussed who would take our baby.”
“Yes.”
“You gave Margaret access because you were afraid I might leave.”
“Yes.”
“And when I actually needed space, you were terrified it proved you right.”
Ryan looked down.
“Yes.”
Claire’s voice softened.
“You keep saying yes.”
“Because I spent too long saying but.”
That stopped her.
Ryan looked up.
“I don’t want you to trust me because I promise I’ve changed.”
“What do you want?”
“I want the chance to behave differently long enough that you can decide.”
Claire stared at him.
That was the first request that did not contain a deadline.
No:
When are you coming back?
No:
How long are you going to punish me?
No:
What else can I do?
Just time.
Claire nodded.
“Then we keep doing what we’re doing.”
Pain crossed Ryan’s face.
But he accepted it.
At the door he stopped.
“Margaret emailed me.”
Claire stiffened.
“She wants to apologize to you.”
“No.”
“I already told her no.”
Claire looked up.
Ryan continued.
“I told her that if you ever want contact, you’ll be the one to decide.”
Another small change.
Not enough.
Real.
After he left, Claire checked Owen.
Her son stretched in his sleep.
Claire touched his tiny socked foot.
For months everyone had acted as though the future required an immediate decision.
Margaret wanted to decide where Owen belonged.
Ryan wanted certainty that Claire would stay.
Claire had threatened leaving because she wanted control over a house where she felt powerless.
