Chapter 10 - THE MESSAGE MARGARET NEVER EXPECTED THEM TO FIND
The major twist came from the family iPad.
Claire had wiped it months earlier when storage became full.
Or so she thought.
A local Apple repair shop had replaced the device after a battery problem during pregnancy, and an automatic backup had preserved older message data.
Claire was not looking for evidence.
She was trying to recover newborn photos.
Instead she found a draft email in Margaret’s webmail account.
Margaret had once logged in on the iPad and never fully signed out.
The draft had never been sent.
Subject:
RYAN — IF CLAIRE LEAVES.
It was dated eighteen days before Owen’s birth.
Claire read it beside Ryan.
Ryan,
You need to stop thinking like a husband and start thinking like a father. Claire has already made it clear she will use leaving whenever she feels cornered. If she walks out after the baby comes, call me before you argue with her. I can get Owen somewhere stable while you deal with Claire.
There was more.
The final paragraph changed everything.
I know what she actually wrote to Hannah. I also know you will dismiss it if you see all the joking around it. You need to understand the risk, not the tone.
Ryan stopped reading.
“What?”
Claire felt cold.
Margaret had known.
Not suspected.
Known.
She had deliberately removed context because she believed the full truth would not frighten Ryan enough.
The altered screenshots were not misunderstandings.
They were persuasion tools.
The draft continued:
Sometimes people only act when they see the worst version clearly.
Ryan stood and walked away from the laptop.
Three earlier clues snapped into place.
Margaret’s strangely exact knowledge of Claire’s private messages.
Her repeated use of Ryan’s childhood abandonment language.
Her insistence that she was “preparing,” not reacting.
She had never believed Claire was definitely planning to disappear.
She had believed Ryan needed to fear that Claire might.
That distinction made the manipulation colder.
Ryan whispered:
“She knew I wouldn’t agree if I saw the whole thread.”
Claire nodded.
Margaret had not simply protected against a risk.
She had manufactured urgency.
Why?
Ryan finally answered that question himself.
“Because she wanted to be the person I called.”
Claire looked at him.
Margaret had spent years being necessary.
After Ryan’s mother died.
After college.
After his first breakup.
After he and Claire bought the house.
Then Claire entered his life.
Marriage created boundaries.
A baby created a new center of gravity.
Margaret had interpreted both as loss.
The emergency plan restored her position.
She became the person entrusted with Owen if Claire failed.
The backup mother.
The rescuer.
The one Ryan supposedly could not survive without.
Margaret had not wanted Owen because she hated Claire.
She wanted to remain indispensable to Ryan.
