Chapter 4 - THE NIGHT CLAIRE DIDN’T GO HOME

Claire did not stay in the house that night.

Not because she wanted to punish Ryan.

Because every room felt compromised.

Margaret had accessed her private messages.

Packed Owen’s belongings.

Attempted to leave with him.

Ryan had created an emergency arrangement without telling Claire.

The marriage needed space before another emotional decision made things worse.

Hannah drove down from Kenosha.

She arrived at nine.

Claire told her only enough to explain why she needed somewhere else to sleep.

Hannah saw the swelling on Claire’s cheek.

“What happened?”

“Margaret hit me.”

Hannah’s expression changed.

“Four times.”

Hannah reached for her phone.

Claire stopped her.

“I already documented it.”

Ryan had insisted Claire photograph the marks before they faded.

That did not erase his betrayal.

But it mattered that he did not ask her to hide Margaret’s behavior.

Claire called a nurse line because she had recently delivered and wanted to make sure there was no reason she needed urgent evaluation after being struck.

She was advised what symptoms would require immediate care.

Owen remained completely unharmed.

Claire fed him.

Changed him.

Then packed only what she actually needed.

Ryan watched from the nursery doorway.

“Where are you going?”

“Hannah’s.”

“For how long?”

“I don’t know.”

Ryan flinched at the phrase.

Claire noticed.

“So this is what happens now?”

He looked ashamed.

“I didn’t mean—”

“Yes, you did.”

She zipped Owen’s diaper bag.

“This is exactly why your fear became so dangerous. Me leaving a house becomes me disappearing.”

Ryan lowered his eyes.

Claire continued.

“I am telling you where I am going.”

“I know.”

“You have my phone number.”

“I know.”

“You know where Owen is.”

“Yes.”

“I am not kidnapping our child because I need one night away from you.”

Ryan nodded.

Claire lifted the diaper bag.

“And Margaret gets no access to Owen.”

“Agreed.”

“No keys.”

“I’ll change the locks tomorrow.”

“No daycare pickup later.”

“Agreed.”

“No coming to the pediatrician unless I know.”

“Yes.”

Claire looked at him.

The ease of his agreement almost made her angrier.

“You should have done all of this before.”

“I know.”

Hannah loaded Owen’s car seat into her SUV.

Claire buckled him in herself.

Before closing the rear door, she looked back at Ryan.

He stood on the porch in his navy shirt.

Alone.

“I’m not leaving you tonight because Margaret told me to.”

Ryan swallowed.

“I know.”

“I’m leaving because you made a decision about me without me.”

May you like

Then Claire closed the door.

For the first time since Owen was born, she slept somewhere Margaret had never been given a key.
