Chapter 8 - The Caller Was Rachel

Grant played the entire emergency call at the review. Rachel had made it. Seven minutes after leaving the SUV, she noticed Ellie's purple backpack was not beside the picnic blanket and ran back. Warren was wandering near the fountain. Ellie was locked inside, barely answering. Rachel gave the dispatcher the row and license plate while Elaine kept saying they could handle it without police. Then Elaine snapped, "She's your niece. Fix this." Rachel gave one hard laugh. "She's not family today. She's your burden." The sentence had not meant Ellie was unwanted; it meant Rachel refused, for once, to carry the consequence Elaine created. Yet Rachel still didn't break the glass. She waited for park staff because she feared injuring Ellie, then took her sons away before the ambulance arrived. In the ER, her smugness had been panic armored as contempt. She had rescued Ellie, abandoned her and lied about both. Maya's clean hatred split open. Rachel was not innocent, but she was no longer simple.
