Chapter 12 - Two Tests, One Child
At the family conference, Elaine stopped blaming Rachel. She admitted the park day had been her idea. Warren's neurologist had recommended supervision, and memory care would drain their savings. Elaine wanted her daughters to share his care. To prove Warren could cope, she chose Maya's SUV, told Rachel to engage the child locks, and left Ellie's water sealed so Warren would have to notice and help her. Rachel knew it was a test. Tired of being the default caregiver, she created a second one: she walked away to see whether Elaine would stay. Elaine followed, determined not to obey Rachel. Both women expected the other to turn back. Warren moved the car, forgot Ellie, then followed music. The "great family day," the untouched bottle, Elaine's obsession with driving, and Rachel's bitter call formed one design. Maya had supplied the car and shared the belief that quiet danger could be controlled. They had not merely forgotten Ellie. They had used her to settle who would carry an aging man.
