Chapter 1 - The Voice on Grant's Phone

Maya slapped the bed rail; the monitor cable jumped. "My six-year-old was locked in my SUV during a heat advisory." Rachel stood near the curtain in a striped shirt, chin lifted as if annoyance could erase the hospital bracelet around Ellie's wrist. Their mother, Elaine, gripped the rail. Their father, Warren, stared at the floor. Officer Grant held the ER report beside the bed. Rachel said, "She's fine. You make everything dramatic." Maya pointed at Ellie's damp hair. "She was found alone." Grant opened the safety case and warned that another lie could end unsupervised family contact. Then he raised his phone and played part of the emergency call. Rachel's voice came through, sharp and laughing: "She's not family today. She's your burden." Elaine stopped breathing once. Ellie reached for her purple backpack and tapped the moon-shaped zipper twice, the signal she used when words felt dangerous. Maya had taught her that signal. She had never expected Ellie to use it against this family.
