Chapter 11 - The Signal Maya Taught

Nora asked Maya for the childcare calendar. The pattern embarrassed her. The dates explained why Rachel's anger had a target. Warren had missed one pickup, driven to the wrong library, and called from a gas station unable to find their street. Each time, Maya thanked Rachel or Elaine for helping and returned to work. She knew enough to worry, but would not surrender free childcare or her promotion. After the library mistake, Ellie had asked whether Grandpa was safe. Maya taught her the two taps and said, "Use this if you feel nervous. Don't embarrass him unless you need me." The signal had trained Ellie to guard an adult's dignity before naming danger. She told Nora everything. The county could now ask why she sent Ellie that morning. She could lose their help without losing blame. She stopped calling herself the only responsible parent. She had seen smoke, then stayed because the house was warm. That choice did not excuse the others. It made her part of the weather Ellie had survived.
