Chapter 6 - The Weight No One Named
Rachel came to Maya's parking lot alone. She stopped at the curb. She stayed beside her car. She asked Maya to tell the caseworker Warren took the keys. "That keeps Mom out of it," she said. Maya heard the real request: sacrifice one parent to preserve the other. Rachel insisted Elaine could not lose access because she managed Warren's medications, bills and appointments. "She has no life outside him," Rachel said. "If the county says she failed Ellie, what does she have left?" Maya replied, "A chance to tell the truth." Rachel's face tightened. She said Warren had been forgetting routes and names for nearly a year, but Elaine called it normal aging. Rachel had driven them everywhere, canceled weekends, and covered their mistakes while Maya accepted free childcare. Maya could not deny it. Then Warren called Rachel. On speaker, he asked about "the little girl in the blue car." Rachel ended the call without answering. Their loyalty had become a fight over who must carry Warren's decline.
