Chapter 10 - Grace at the Door
Elaine stopped apologizing and organized. She requested supervised visits, naming Rachel as the one who left Ellie. She canceled Warren's memory testing, blaming county pressure, and asked their church to deliver meals. Each casserole arrived with a note about grace. Refusal looked cruel; acceptance looked like trust. Then, Elaine offered to pay for childcare if Maya signed a statement that Warren had moved the SUV only after Rachel left him with Ellie. The wording removed Elaine from the decision. Maya returned the check unsigned. Two days later, her manager mentioned that an older woman had called the office asking whether Maya often abandoned work for "personal drama." Elaine denied making the call but knew the exact phrase before Maya repeated it. Warren left Maya two voicemails, asking whether Ellie still needed him after school. The pressure was no longer about seeing Ellie. Elaine was rebuilding the family story around one useful villain, and Rachel's guilt made her easy to use.
